Fiery, impulsive, and emotionally complex, Hotspot blazes onto the scene in Zoom Suit #3 as both a formidable antagonist and a tragic figure shaped by loss and legacy. Beneath the flame-wielding exterior is Katelynn Kane, a brilliant but emotionally scarred young girl still grieving the death of her beloved grandmother. While she enters the series as a villain opposing Myles (Zoom), Hotspot’s motivations and mysterious origin make her one of the most layered and compelling characters in the Zoom Suit universe.
Katelynn Kane grew up in a small Florida town, raised by her eccentric and fiercely protective grandmother, Evelyn. Upon her deathbed, Grandma Evelyn, an alleged amateur geologist and collector of rare minerals, bequeath to Katelynn a unique necklace: a fiery green jewel set in an antique, bronze-framed necklace. Unbeknownst to Katelynn, the jewel is Element 116, the same alien-derived substance that powers the technologically advanced Zoom Suit. But while Zoom’s suit channels the element through a structured alien metal energy matrix, Katelynn’s exposure is raw, emotional, and instinctive, which amplifies the deep personal connection she has to the necklace and the grief tied to it.
As a sneak peak, Katelynn’s powers first manifested during a middle school confrontation, when Katelynn was cornered by a group of bullies. In a burst of rage and fear, she unleashed a torrent of flames, scarring the school gym and changing her life forever. Ever the loner, Katelynn hones her abilities in secret, discovering she can create and manipulate fire, shape it into projectiles, and generate intense bursts of heat strong enough to melt steel. When fully enraged, her body becomes enveloped in a corona of fire, granting her resistance to heat and partial flight.
Adopting the name Hotspot, she punishes adults, and children alike, that target defenseless children or animals, acting as judge jury and sometimes near executioner. Katelynn also acts with extreme prejudice against anyone that is a threat to the memory of her grandmother. Though her intentions appear to lean toward justice, her volatile emotions and destructive methods put her at odds with the law, and the young hero Zoom.
In their first encounter, Zoom is caught off guard by her beauty, intensity and power. More troubling, however, is the realization that their abilities are connected. When they clash, their powers cause unpredictable energy surges, hinting at a deeper relationship between Katelynn’s necklace and the Zoom Suit itself. Neither of them knows yet that the Element 116 feeding their powers is …well, let’s keep that a secret, for now.
Hotspot vacillating between being a force of vengeance, and vulnerability, makes her more than a fire-slinging foil. Will she be the spark that ignites war, or Myles second case of puppy love?
Hotspot is slated to be a breakout character in the Zoom Suit universe. A red-headed inferno with a story that is only just beginning.
